Contrary to what some believe to be a Hallmark Holiday, Father’s Day actually has a rich and worldwide history. Celebrated since the Middle Ages in Catholic Europe, it is a day in which to honor fathers, celebrate fatherhood and the influence of fathers in society. Around the world, Father’s Day is commonly honored in the months of March or May.
It was not observed in the U.S. until an unofficial event was held on July 5, 1908. But it was brought to national attention by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
Now, let’s all celebrate this thoughtful holiday with a few wonderful ways to make the fathers, and father figures, in our life, feel special this Father’s Day.
