Fireplaces often act as the focal point of the room they are in, no matter what type of décor and accents you choose for the space. A fireplace immediately attracts the eye, and because of this, you have the opportunity to design your mantel in a way that not only boasts some of your favorite possessions and personal taste, but also to leave a lasting first impression on visiting guests. Keep the following tips in mind when designing your mantel.
A Work of Art – Nothing draws the eye like a piece of art, and nothing starts a conversation like one either. Don’t be afraid to go big here; a piece that’s about two thirds of the size of the mantel will look great. Compliment the art with elements that display similar colors or themes. If you don’t want the mantel to be dominated by a large piece of art, choose three smaller sized pieces to hang together as a collection above the mantel instead.
Don’t Ignore Texture – Pieces with texture help add depth and visual interest to the mantel, whether you place a small sculpture, a piece of driftwood or 3D art on the mantel.
Using the Right Mirror – A mirror hung above the mantel can also work well, as long as it’s large enough and it has a visually interesting frame.
