Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach) is Professor and Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University.  He has been using 50 different categories to rate beaches across America for twenty years now.  His list is released every Memorial Day to mark the unofficial start of beach season.  Take a look at his website to learn more about the work he is doing, his rating system and to learn about beautiful beaches across the country.
